CHAPTER ELEVEN

Another day had come and gone. After going over the map several times, it became clear that Kansas City was going to be one hell of an adventure. There were a lot of towns to stop by along the way, supplies to get and places to explore. I had more to learn about Ally and her ways on the side. Speaking of, she’s sleeping right now – off in the dream space. I’m not a demon, so I can’t really say how peculiar that is nor do I care. It’s post-apocalyptic America, why bother? We’ve been so busy fighting the walking corpses and scrounging for food, it didn’t really cross my mind.

Now it’s me and Jill, driving north.

“You think,” Jill says, “that they dream like us?”

“What do you mean?”

Jill shrugs, a gentle breeze kissing her face as we pass more abandoned businesses. “I mean, you said she goes to sleep, right?”

“I don’t really know what it is she does, I just know when she needs to rest, her physical body just kind of goes poof.”

“So, she’s sleeping, right?”

I shrug. “Physically. Sometimes she can whisper to me.”

“Strange,” she says, “I wonder how she pulls that off.”

“No idea, but when she comes around again, we should ask her,” I say.

Jill bites her lip. “So like… she’s a sex demon, right?”

I flush red. “Uh… yeah. How did you know that?”

“I mean look at her. And I heard you guys,” Jill says, “so I was curious.”

“Yeah, she’s a succubus. That’s what she says,” I grab one of the breakfast pastries from the glove-box I set aside, opening it to take a bite. Mm. Apple.

Jill nods. “She gets your energy, right, when you guys screw?”

I about spit out my food. “Jill, jeez.”

“What else do you want me to say. When you fuck?”

“I, er-”

She bursts out laughing. “What, did I embarrass you? What are you, a little boy? Grow up, Dex.”

Good lord, Jill, do you have to be so blunt about everything? I take another bite, trying to play it off. “Ha ha, very funny,” I roll my eyes sarcastically, “good one. Do I ask about your sex life?”

She laughs again. “What sex life?”

“Look, it doesn’t matter. The world is over, sex doesn’t matter.”

She shrugs. “That’s when you’re supposed to do it like rabbits. So answer my question.”

Jill’s really pushy about this for some reason. “Yeah, apparently. And yes, she gets energy from me that way, at least the most of it. She can feed of ‘awake’ energy. Like, being conscious, but she hasn’t explained why she’s able to do that on a whim, then go and use my… um, romantic… energy...”

She scratches her chin. “I wonder if that means you guys are in a relationship?”

“Oh come on, Ally’s a sex demon.”

“Yeah, but I bet you’re bound somehow. That’s how those things work. Haven’t ever watched a scary movie? You summon a demon, you make a pact, or when you meet one, you have to bind yourself in someway.”

“Well, I’ll get clarification on that,” I say.
